Within your Word document, position the cursor where you want to add the footnote.First make sure you have chosen the correct referencing style for your document by going to the EndNote Toolbar and, next to style, choose the style you require by clicking Select another style from the drop down menu.Some referencing styles such as MHRA and OSCOLA request that citations are placed within footnotes at the bottom of the page.ĮndNote cannot create a footnote, this needs to be added using the formatting tools in Word. If you need to reverse this change, repeat the process and unselect the option for this citation. In the text you should just see the year is left within the brackets and you can now type the author’s name in the text.If you are using Desktop EndNote next to Formatting select the drop down arrow and choose Exclude Author. Under Edit citation you need to click next to Exclude Author.

If you don’t enter a comma after the organisation name, EndNote will think it is the name of the person and display it as University, M.M. If your reference includes the name of an organisation, make sure a comma is added after the name e.g. When entering names use the following order Last Name, First Name e.g. Usually if your citation isn’t appearing correctly in Word, it is down to the fact there is an issue with data in EndNote.Įnsure each author is entered on a separate line in EndNote. You will then see the EndNote toolbar. To ensure that your Word document is linked to the Online version of EndNote, click on Preferences and then application and check that EndNote Online is selected. You may have to enter your EndNote Online log in details again. You will need to enter your EndNote Online email address and password. Click on the EndNote tab to link your document to your EndNote Online library. When you open Word, you will see the EndNote tab appears on the Word toolbar. Simply follow the onscreen instructions, and click finish when the installation is complete

Once the download begins, you will see a series of dialogue boxes. Before you start downloading installers ensure that Microsoft Word is shut down. Then, simply choose the appropriate plugin for your system and click to start the download. You may wish to read the installation instructions and the information about system requirements. Once you have logged into your EndNote online account, click on the ‘downloads’ tab. This allows you to use the Cite While you Write function to automatically create in-text citations and build up your reference list.
